In the streets of Cusco we had seen advertisements for tours to Rainbow Mountain, or, Winicunca to use the local name, but I couldn’t find anything in our slightly out-of-date guide book about the hike. As it turns out, the multi-hued mountain was covered under a layer of ice until recently. With the changing climate, the ice has now disappeared, revealing striped, rainbow like slopes, and the locals soon figured out that tourists would pay to hike to such a magical place. Interestingly, most of the tourists were Peruvian, possibly captivated by the natural representation of the age old Incan rainbow flag.
June 15, 2018 – June 16, 2018
A Colombian we had met earlier in the trip had recommended that we try to go to San Jose de Guaviare, on the llanos (plains) south and east of the capital city of Bogota. He said that there was a lot of wildlife and that it was a beautiful and little visited place set between the mountains and the amazon jungle in Colombia. We did a bit of research and decided that it sounded very interesting and we were very excited.

So what does your perfect beach look like? A crescent bay with wide flat sand? Warm, gentle waves that occasionally ramp it up for a bit of fun? Backed by rainforest where howler monkeys play? Maybe a few nice restaurants near by? Shady camping? What about throwing in a few wild horses and their colts that occasionally make their way past your camp along the sand?
April 13 – April 14, 2018
We headed back to towards Lago Cocibolca (Lake Nicaragua) to take the ferry to La Isla de Ometepe. Ometepe consists of two volcanos, the active Concepcion (which hasn’t done anything in probably about 70 years) and the inactive Maderas, which ages ago became joined to form a single island.
