We drove to the coast making a quick side trip into the outskirts of Cancun to visit the bank, then headed south towards Puerto Morelos. We had decided to spend a night at Acamaya Reef Hotel & Cabanas, where they let you camp in their sandy parking lot for the night. We knew it was going to be expensive, but we decided to check it out. 660 pesos for the night, about 45 Canadian dollars. It was a cute little place sandwiched between two small all inclusive hotels, and one of the few places along the strip of beach that wasn’t an all inclusive resort. The family that owns it is sitting on a gold mine!
The beach was nice and we had some internet for the day, but we knew we could find a lot cheaper place to stay if we kept moving on. We did get to meet a great couple from Vancouver who we could have spent a lot more time getting to know….maybe someday on Canadian turf.
We left the next day and drove through the small town of Puerto Morelos, full of dread locked surfers, fish shacks and bars. We arrived in Mahahual and made our way to Coco Ha, a small grassy lot next to the beach and just steps away from the bars and restaurants of the malecon. We set up for 120 pesos per night (about 8 CAD)…way better. The beach has lots of washed up sea grass, but the water was beautiful, and we needed to just hang somewhere for a few days to get some small repairs done on the camper, get after some other chores, and to do some reading about what there is to see and do in Belize.
Hola Cathy, Derek, Piper,
First I love that you include photos of that lovely creature: Piper that is! Derek, have you worked on your experiment since being on the ocean? I look forward to avidly reading your posts Cathy and enjoy the photos. I check regularly to see where you are. Yes, Acamaya is expensive. I had paid for 3 days and ended spending an extra week because of the owner who came to introduce himself as he likes cats and who then spent 4 hours with me visiting by his small restaurant. He is an artist from Paris who worked with Picasso at the latter’s studio in Valauris North of Nice. I was elated to spend time with him hearing the Parisian French as my grandpa came from France and it is my first language.
May the roads ahead be smooth… Adela
